Readings: Luke 2:1-7

1. Discuss the things we might have wrong ideas about in relation to the birth of Christ. for instance:
• how did Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem?
• where in Bethlehem was Jesus born?
• which books of the bible talk about the birth of Christ (Old and New Testament)?
• did Joseph meet the wise men?
• who besides the wise men saw the star?
• was the star particularly bright?
• ...what else is there that is tradition rather than fact?
2. What might Mary and Joseph been feeling and thinking?
3. What keeps us from having Christ at (a) the centre of our Christmas and (b) at the centre of our lives?
4. How can we encourage each other in putting this right with Jesus (this being 3 above)?

Reading: John 1:43-51 & Genesis 28

1. Read Genesis 28 and discuss what you know of it as a group (don't worry about what you don't know!)
2. Verse 43? Why did Jesus decide to go to Galilee?
3. Discuss the enormity of what accepting Jesus' invite "come follow me" means?
4. What's Nathanael's problem with Nazareth?
5. What is Nathanael doing under the fig tree? How important is it that we daily spend time with God?
6. Philip uses the best phrase in discussing Jesus with others: Come and see for yourself”. What's good about that?
7. Talk about the conversation Jesus and Nathanael have; what can we learn from it, and what about that stairway?

1. In the sermon we looked at a few of the ideas people today have about who Jesus is. Discuss some of these as a group. What difference does our idea of who Jesus is make to our lives today?
2. The second half of verse 14 says "And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son". What is god's glory? Can we see it today?
3. Verses 14 and 16: What is:
• grace;
• truth.
4. Verse 17, how does the law fit with grace and truth? And what difference does knowing that make to you?
5. Verse 18 says, (in the New Living Translation) "No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us." First talk through what God's 'father's heart' means, and then use this as a theme to lead you into a time of prayer.
